CYCLE ACROSS SICILY

May 28th - June 6th 2027
September 3rd - September 12th, 2027

Trapani to Catania, coast to coast, with Mount Etna smoking on the horizon the whole way there. This isn't a spin class with better scenery, it's 269 miles of Sicily's back roads, salt flats, vineyards, and hill towns most tourists will never see, pedaled by a crew of 12 riders, 3 coaches, 2 sag vehicles, and Bolt riding shotgun the entire trip.

You'll climb through abandoned hilltop villages where you can still buy a house for a dollar (bring cash, just in case). You'll coast down into Agrigento for a rest day among Greek temples older than most countries. Included are 27 meals that actually taste like Sicily, because Etnaonian food philosophy says the ride is just the thing you do between courses. And you'll finish it all in Catania with a post-ride party you'll be dining out on for years.

Gravel bikes, expert guides, and a support van that means "I'm tired" is always an option, never a dealbreaker. Whether you're chasing Strava segments or just chasing the next cafe stop, this trip meets you where your fitness is and gets you to the finish line with a medal, a tan line, and a group chat you'll never leave.

ITINERARY

We believe the best trips are the ones with zero surprises (well, except the good kind, like your first bite of arancini in Trapani). That's why this itinerary is as detailed as it is. Every ride distance, elevation profile, meal, transfer, and rest stop is laid out ahead of time so you know exactly what each day asks of you and exactly what you're getting in return. The more you know before you clip in, the more you can actually relax and enjoy the ride. No guessing about pack lists, no surprise 4,000-foot climbs you didn't train for, no wondering when the next espresso stop is. We want every person on this trip to show up prepared, ride confidently, and spend their energy soaking up Sicily instead of stressing over logistics. So read it closely, ask us anything that's unclear, and trust that if it's not in here, we've got it covered.

About Trapani

The city is renowned for its stunning architecture, including the Medieval walled city of Erice, and the ancient Greek temples of Segesta and Selinunte. Additionally, the charming fishing village of Marausa is a must-visit destination.

The city also boasts evidence of industrial archeology in the form of windmills and saltworks. The saltworks are situated in the Natural Reserve of Saline di Trapani and Paceco, which is managed by the WWF and is home to a remarkable flora and fauna. Thanks to the Reserve's protection, the activity of saltworkers and salt production have increased, encouraging the return and reproduction of dozens of species of migratory birds, including the pink flamingo. Trapani is also famous for its delicious seafood dishes, colorful markets, and stunning beaches. It is a unique and vibrant city that delights visitors with its Sicilian simplicity.

BOAT TOUR TO FAVIGNANA

Favignana, an island located in the Mediterranean Sea, was known as Aegusa during ancient times. The name Aegusa means “goat island” in Greek. The present name, Favignana, is derived from an Italian name for the foehn wind called Favonio. The Phoenicians established an outpost on the island to use it as a stopping point on their trans-Mediterranean trading routes. However, this came to an end after the defeat of the Carthaginian army during the First Punic War.

A gradual climb as we slowly ascend as we head towards the east. We pass by the salt pans of Trapani, lakes, vast fields, and ancient Sicilian towns. Our final destination is Nuova Gibellina, nestled at the base of Monte Cofano and surrounded by rolling hills and olive groves. This city holds immense historical significance, having been destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1968 and then reconstructed by some of the world’s leading modernist architects. There are several noteworthy attractions in the city, which include the 16th-century San Calogero church, the archaeological museum, and stunning Baroque buildings in the old town.

DAY 4 - MONDAY

Stage #2 - Giballina To Sambuca Di Sicilia 32m / 50k

Today is a climbing day as we make our way through the middle of Sicily. Along the way, we will encounter a few steep segments that may challenge our legs but rest assured that at the top of every climb, we will be rewarded with another spectacular vista of the remote Sicilian countryside. Many of the towns we pass are abandoned, yet they are full of history. You will notice many of the $1 homes that you may have heard about in Sicily, so it’s best to bring cash. Who knows, maybe we could even buy a whole town? Would you like to join in?

You should expect to encounter some gravel on the way, so patience will be key. The vistas are breathtaking, with vineyards and valleys that have been farmed by the same families for centuries. This region has remained unchanged and is one of the most authentic places you can visit in Sicily.

The terrain here doesn't let up, so consistent effort and relaxed but strong pedal strokes will carry us through the long climbs ahead. Frequent hydration is essential given the demands of the stage, and while the legs will be tested, so will our appreciation for the epic scenery unfolding around us. It's a stage that rewards patience and steady pacing over bursts of speed, and crossing into Caltanissetta at the end of it will feel like a true accomplishment.

FAQ's

How does Terrier designate levels?
Easy Peasy: You don't really ride outside, maybe around the block with the family while wrangling the kids. But you know what a spin class is.
Beginner: You spin 1 to 2 times a week and are thinking about getting a bike with matching spandex.
Road Beginner: You spin inside, ride outside 1 to 2 times a week, and are thinking about cleats. Bike envy is real, and spandex has been shopped for.
Intermediate: You ride outside 1 to 3 times a week, have a Strava account, and are starting to understand "Strava segments." Club kits are a thing.
Intermediate/Advanced: You're outside 2 to 4 times a week, have a Strava account, know your segments, and have entered the world of Zwift.
Advanced: You're outside 2 to 5 times a week, have a Strava account, make your own segments, dream about Strava, are a certified "local legend," and your bike has a name.
Still not sure? Email us and we'll talk through your fitness and cycling background together.

How should I pack?
Travel light with a backpack and a carry on to avoid the stress of delayed luggage. You won't need to overpack since laundry service is available on our day off, which is included in the trip. Pack minimally, stay mobile, and make the most of the ride.

Can I bring someone who doesn't ride?
Absolutely. Your partner or a family member is welcome to join. Please note this still counts as a spot in the group, so we're not able to offer a discount. Non riders travel in the support vehicle and can help distribute water bottles and snacks and capture photos along the route. It's a fun way to experience the trip from a different seat, and who knows, maybe a future support crew member is born.

What if I can't complete the full route or get tired?
No problem at all. Our support vehicles follow the route throughout the day. You can hop in for a stretch, rest, and rejoin the ride whenever you're ready to finish the stage on two wheels.

What if I have special food needs or medication?
You're welcome to self carry, or we can store items in the support vehicle and hand them off as needed. Since the vehicles move between groups throughout the day, keep in mind that immediate access isn't always guaranteed.

Is alcohol included?
It's not included, but you're welcome to enjoy a glass and sip responsibly.

I'm arriving early or staying longer, can you help?
Of course. We're happy to help arrange additional tours, accommodations, or extra riding time before or after the trip.

I'm arriving a day late or leaving a day early, can I still join?
Yes. We'll coordinate a plan for you to meet the group later or depart earlier. Note that additional transportation arrangements may come with an extra fee.

Do accommodations have private bathrooms?
Yes. Rooms booked for one or two people include a private bathroom. Rooms for three or more may share a bathroom, though everyone still has their own bedroom. Some of our properties are in historic buildings, so a bathroom might feature a hand held shower attached to the tub. Consider it part of the charm, that same bathroom has seen a few centuries come and go.

Can I work remotely for a day or a few hours?
Definitely doable. We'll share estimated daily departure and arrival times ahead of the trip so you can plan around them. Just know we'll be riding through some remote areas, so cell coverage can be spotty. Consider it the ultimate work from anywhere challenge.

What's the cancellation policy?

We know plans change, so we've built in as much flexibility as we can. A deposit of $900 secures your spot, with the following refund and credit structure based on how far out you cancel.

We're unable to make exceptions to this policy for personal emergencies, weather or travel delays, natural disasters, or other unforeseen events. Terrier reserves the right to cancel a trip if athlete or staff safety is a concern; in that case, payments received will be considered final settlement.

- More than 90 days out: fully refundable or credited to a future adventure.
- 61 to 90 days out: 75 percent refundable credit, or 100 percent credit toward a future Terrier Adventure or Livestream membership.
- 31 to 60 days out: 50 percent refundable credit, or 75 percent credit toward a future Terrier Adventure or Livestream membership.
- 0 to 30 days out: no refundable credit, but 15 percent credit toward Terrier Livestream.

Do I need to bring my own bike?
No, a gravel bike is included in your trip. E-bike upgrades are available for an additional fee if you'd like some extra support on the climbs. If you prefer riding your own bike, let us know in advance and we'll help you plan for it.

What's the group riding pace like?
We group riders by ability each day so everyone rides at a pace that suits them. Coaches and guides stay with each group, and support vehicles are always within reach, so nobody is ever riding alone or unsupported.

Do I need gravel riding experience?
Some prior experience helps, but it's not required. Our routes mix paved roads with light gravel sections, and our guides will walk you through handling tips before we hit any technical terrain.

What should I do to prepare physically?
You'll receive a 12 week training schedule ahead of the trip to help you build the endurance and climbing strength you'll need. Following it will make the tougher stages far more enjoyable.

Is travel insurance recommended?
Yes, we strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical care, and gear. Given the nature of the cancellation policy above, insurance offers extra peace of mind.

Will I have wifi or phone access during the trip?
Most accommodations offer wifi, but coverage can be limited in the more remote parts of the route. We recommend downloading anything you need offline and letting friends or family know signal may be inconsistent during riding hours.

What currency should I bring, and is tipping expected?
Euros are the local currency, and most accommodations and restaurants accept cards, though cash is handy in smaller towns. Tipping isn't mandatory in Sicily but is always appreciated for exceptional service from our guides and staff.

What happens if I get injured or need medical attention?
Your safety is our top priority. Our team is trained to respond quickly, and support vehicles carry first aid supplies. For anything beyond minor care, we'll coordinate transport to the nearest medical facility.
